Temporary Or Eternal
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were wonderful indeed! These impressive creations of human genius include the Tomb of Mausolos, built in 350 bc; the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus; the Hanging Gardens of Babylon; King Ptolemy's lighthouse near Alexandria; the 100-foot statue of Apollo called the Colossus of Rhodes; the 40-foot statue of Zeus in the city of Olympia; and the great pyramids of Egypt.
Sunrise In Heaven
"It's unsinkable!" That was the proud boast made by the builders of the Titanic, the magnificent ocean liner that on April 14, 1912, went down during its maiden voyage. Most of the 2,100 passengers were sent to their deaths.
A Witness At Christmas
During the holiday season, an atheistic organization put a sign alongside the community Christmas display in Madison, Wisconsin. It blatantly declared: "In this season of the winter solstice, may reason prevail. There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our material world. Religion is but a myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds."
The Immensity Of God's Love
How big is the universe? If you ask an astronomer, he'll tell you that the universe contains trillions of stars, and that the most distant galaxies are billions of light-years away. Not just thousands or millions or even billions of stars, but trillions of them spread out across the vast expanse of space!
Haunting Fears
Irrational fears, or phobias, torment many people. They may be afraid of crowds or open spaces or heights. There's even a fear called theophobia, which is either a dread that God exists or a strong denial of His existence.
Spiritual Prosperity
The Bible tells us that God will supply all our needs (Phil. 4:19). Because His resources are limitless, He is able to do that for everybody who comes to Him in faith.
Cookies Or Radishes?
A study of temptation was conducted at Case Western Reserve University. Some participants were told to skip a meal before being left alone with a plate of radishes and a plate of cookies. The radishes could be eaten; the cookies were forbidden.
Needed: Power To Change
Author Gerald N. Callahan is a professor at Colorado State University. Colorado has long been my home, so I was interested in his recent book River Odyssey, in which he discusses his experiences and thoughts about life. Interesting, for example, is his rueful confession, "I drink too much . . . I eat like myocardial infarctions and colon cancer don't kill middle-aged men, and every morning I swear I'll change, but nothing ever changes."
'A Jesus Nut'
A Navy pilot was describing his complex helicopter to his parents one day. He told them that a small hexagonal nut held the main rotor to the mast of the helicopter.
